Buste de Marie-Thérèse

For this sculpture called « buste de Marie-Thérèse » made in 1931, Picasso is using plaster.

The sculpture represents a bust, with an elongated neck and a head with unsual proportions. It’s part of the cubism movement to create destructured figures and faces, here we can see that the face has différents aspects according to your point of view. She has a prominent nose and uneven eyes.

However Picasso succeeded to creat harmony by assembling these elements and the plaster seated a soft and smooth texture.

Tableau Coeur, Keith Haring

 Pop Art

Keith Haring, « Tableau Coeur » 1988

The Keith Haring « Tableau Coeur » is an inspiring and vibrant piece of contemporary art that captures the essence of legendary artist Keith Haring. Haring is a popular artist who began his career in New York in the 1980s, with his unique and bold drawing style that quickly became famous the world over.

The titan's goblet is an artwork from the Hudson River School movement, which is nicknamed as a painting within a painting by the metropolitan museum of art, New York USA.

It was made by Thomas Cole, the founder of this movement in 1833 and it is described as his most mysterious work which défies full explanation of regular art. Allegorical andimaginary landscape

Yellow Canyon, Helen Frankenthaler

In this painting, the artist uses pouring technic to create a point of depth in the center, here the yellow color. We can see the big brush's movements that create large lines and grandeur effect. We can think this artwork relate to the movement abstract expressionism due to the painting technics used but also to minimalism.

Diptych Marilyn

I have chosen Diptych Marilyn, is an acrylic screen print on canvas by the American artist Andy Warhol produced in 1962 and is exhibited at the Tate Modern an art gallery in London. This screen print contains 50 images of American actress and model Marilyn Monroe , all based on the same publicity photograph for the film Niagara (1953). It is enrolled in the movement of the Pop art. The 25 representations on the left of the diptych are very colorful, it represents her life while the 25 representations on the right are black and white, it represents the end of her life, her death. Andy Warhol decided to paint the Marilyn Diptych a few weeks after Monroe's death. He found in her a fusion of two constant themes: death and the cult of celebrity. By copying the same image several times, he evokes his presence in the media.

“Red circle on Black”

“Red Circle on Black”, Jiro Yoshihara, 1965

This amazing paint was created in 1965 by Jiro Yoshihara in Minimalism style. The artist is a pioneer of post-war Japanese art. He was inspired by Japanese calligraphy and Zen philosophy. He hand signed his artwork so it’s considered as extremely rare. Yoshihara used a technique for surface printing called Silkscreens. This artwork is the perfect representation of “less is more” a famous quote of minimalism art. In fact the colours used are monochromatic. The only motives are geometrical. I love this painting but I also really liked the mindset of the artist because while realising this artwork he said “Do what has never been done before”. “Red Circle on Black” definitely raised debates but I personally think that it deserves all of the fame it could possibly get.

Walking through the town

« The three lines of fortifications made three black lines of people. »

« down past the steep street that led to the bridge across the Arga. »

« down past the market »

« their cages into the corrals. »

« Then they pulled up the door of the cage. »

«  the great brown cathedral »

« You have to drink plenty of wine to get it all down »

« The driver helped us down with the bags. There was a crowd of kids watching the car »

« It is always cool in the down-stairs dining-room and we had a very good lunch »

« We passed the bull-ring »

« We passed the bull-ring, high and white and concrete-looking in the sun, and then came into the big square by a side street and stopped in front of the Hotel Montoya »

This extract revolves around how much jake and hus friends have appreciated the city of Pampelona, try a lot of cafés and wine shops, spending most of their money in these.

The first part deals with the fiesta, a renown and traditional spanish fiesta with bulls.

The second part revolves around Pampelona, its narrow streets and what they have done during the morning, which is going to be buying wine.

Starting with the second part of the text, the four other parts after this one mostly talk about Pampelona's cathedral and its surroundings.

We then have chosen this place as the topical theme of this extract, since it is the one that is the most represented

Extrat 2- Chapter 10: Noé B, Emma L, Hugo K, Camille C

« I went to the Ayuntamiento and found the old gentleman who subscribes for the bull-fights tickets […] so that was all set. »

« We  went out to walk around under the arcade to the Café Iruña for coffee. »

« I saw Cohn coming over across the square. »

« At the end of the street I saw the cathedral and walked up toward it. The first time I ever saw it I thought the facade was ugly but I liked it now. I went inside. »

The end of the fiesta

« The white-paper announcements of the unloading of the bulls and the big schedules of trains were still up on the pillars of the arcade. »
« The cafés were just opening[…] I sat in one of the wicker chairs »
« The square was empty and there were no people on the streets »

And the winners are...

Following our suspense story contest, here are the winners for 2023!

DARLING

When I opened my tired eyes, I was in a dark and mysterious room that I did not recognize. I was dressed up as usual but I felt weird, my body seemed different. I walked out of the special room and again everything was different, that was not my childhood house. I was all alone and I had no memories that my parents had told me they had to leave the house.

I was walking in the huge corridor when I suddenly heard someone who seemed to be climbing the stairs. I pondered for a few minutes and then decided to hide. I entered in the nearest room, still nobody. The intriguing footsteps were coming towards the door. I felt afraid as well as panicstricken. I locked the heavy black door and hid under a wooden bed. While I was waiting the lights in the corridor were turned on. I watched under the door and I saw two black shoes. The man started to call me “Honey” nonetheless I did not understand why. I had never heard that imposing voice before. I went out of my little hide and turned the lights on.

Suddenly I saw my face in the navy-blue mirror, I was older because my face was really different and I was taller. While I was looking at me in the huge mirror, the door opened, the man appeared with a bloody knife and said : “Darling, did you have a good sleep ?”...

Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin, 1936

Charlie Chaplin is known for being a whistleblower, an engaged movie director, indeed he made several engaged movies, Modern Times is one of them.

Modern Times can be considered as a critique, a manifesto against the inhuman and degrading working conditions that the factory workers had to face during the 30s.

Despite being a comedy, Modern Times tackle the issue of huge lack of social justice in America during that time period. For example we can at some point in the movie factory workers striking their factory. and demonstrating in the street because they yearn a decent living wage. Charlie Chaplin is himself, living like an outcast in a run-down house.

To conclude, Modern Time is a outspoken movie that is fairly thought-provoking movie about the American gig economy.
