Modern Times, Charlie Chaplin, 1936

Charlie Chaplin is known for being a whistleblower, an engaged movie director, indeed he made several engaged movies, Modern Times is one of them.

Modern Times can be considered as a critique, a manifesto against the inhuman and degrading working conditions that the factory workers had to face during the 30s.

Despite being a comedy, Modern Times tackle the issue of huge lack of social justice in America during that time period. For example we can at some point in the movie factory workers striking their factory. and demonstrating in the street because they yearn a decent living wage. Charlie Chaplin is himself, living like an outcast in a run-down house.

To conclude, Modern Time is a outspoken movie that is fairly thought-provoking movie about the American gig economy.

North and South 🎬

Adaptation of the eponymous novel North and South: romance and social opposition in Victorian England by Elizabeth Gaskell

Thus, what the North and the South offer is above all a social exploration, both regional and contextual.

Besides its compelling portrayal of England and its working class at the time, the miniseries' other big draw is the impeccable performance of cast members Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ash. Some of the main characters, a bit cliché since, will also drop out of the game

This is how we managed to learn more about the "hidden side" of the Industrial Revolution. North and South is a show not to be missed that will open your mind.

Oliver ! by Carol Reed - A film review

Oliver! is the film adaptation of Charles Dickens' most popular novel Oliver Twist. This brilliant musical follows the original scenario, adding some comic elements and beautiful vocals to it. The actors are well cast, and the scenery is very life like. The spectator is invited to a time travel back to the 19th century, during the industrial revolution.

Through this film we manage to observe a glimpse of the Victorian Era, as well as the harsh reality of this period. Reed's sophisticated directing highlights the orphan's emotions

Sorry We Missed You realised by Daniel Blake in 2019

Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot is a coming-of-age comedy-drama film released in 2000. Story takes place during the miners strike in 1984 and 1985.

I chose this film because the plot is unheard of and it really striked me when I watched it for the first time.

Stephen Daldry, the producer, really made a good job by paralleling both little Elliot emancipation and the professional life of his father which was being a miner in 1984. Also we don't often see a single father raising alone his child. He embodies the hard balance which a lot of miners had to deal with : keep striking or make a living for your family.

North and south

                               North And South

This mini serie was realized by Brian Percival in 2004.

The story itself covers the two decades leading up to the years of the election of President Abraham Lincoln and the imminent proclamation of the Civil War.

We learn a lot about the contrasting attitudes to such controversial aspects as 'Slavery' and 'Abolitionists', and how these attitudes originated.

The series is beautifully crafted and is firmly tied to actual historic events ,vitale drama about social issues, social justice, the hardships of the poor working class, and human relationships.

North & South is a masterpiece and a beautiful and affecting love story. This four-part mini-series succeeds not only as an adaptation and very faithful but also on its own terms. The story here is still the beautiful, affecting and timeless story I fell in love with.

I, Daniel Bake

"I, Daniel Bake" is a 2016 drama film directed by Ken loach.

"I, Daniel Blake" spotlights this inhumane treatment of poverty-stricken people. More importantly, it personifies those who are failed by the institutions created to protect and serve them.

Despite the film's deliberate pace, quiet tone and intimate camerawork, his rage is unmistakable. It's an impactful movie who marks people's minds.

North and South is a drama mini-série directed by Brian Percival which is adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's iconic book.

We learn about a southern family's heart-breaking story as they move to the north of England during the industrial revolution. We learn about their suffocating life and how hard it was for poor people to live at that period of time. Percival wanted to depict this by using a lot of emotions and he was really outspoken with this show.

So we manage to learn more about the “hidden side” of the Industrial revolution. North and South is an unmissable show that will open your mind.

“Oliver!”

“Oliver!”, which came out in 1968 was by far one of the most brilliant and vibrant movies that ever existed.                                                                                                                                                Firstly, it will never age. This dramatic musical is absolutely touching. We can feel through the screen the freedom of children in the acting. We can also throw light on the authenticity in the roles, which is truly touching. I find it very unique, because usually you can have trouble finding dynamic movies, made with songs, lively productions creating a great performance along the story, which is authentically realistic.

This adaptation of Charles Dickens' novel from 1838 will for sure be exciting for you and your children to watch, notably thanks to the plot of the story and also the unforgettable characters. We are getting closer to them, following their personalities and you will very certainly surprise yourself getting attached to them.

I, Daniel Blake review

I, Daniel Blake is a ken loach movie. It’s the story of  Daniel Blake, a 59-year-old English carpenter who after a heart attack is jobless and penniless. It’s also the story of Katie a single mother of 2 .

It’s an impactful and emotional movie who shows the behind of the british welfare. Despite their different backgrounds and struggles the experience of the main characters is shared by many people in the world. This film can touch a lot of people, due to the fact that some of them can relate to it, or just see the injustice of the British civil service. This movie is one of several ken loach masterpieces's who deals with social injustice in United Kingdom

To conclude this  movie is riveting and can help people to understand what's going on in many people's lifes.

The film review of Oliver !

Oliver ! is a musical drama film directed by Carol Reed which came out in 1968.
I chose this film rather atypical by its genre which deals in a specific way the same problems that the society meets in the initial book Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens who is an English writer and social critic.
The fact that this movie is a musical one with all the typical soundtraks makes people way more open and understanding on the problems the story wants to make aware of by some scenes like the famous one "I want some more" scene.
As I said this film is quite unique in its genre to talk about several society and economic's problems such as the difference of wages between the class and how the poorest people were treated in the workhouse. Working everyday, almost every hours into these conditions without being paid could and in fact is a interesting link with our current society and the GIG economy.
This film deals with several important subjects of the society into a happy and almost humorous way : it could be at first absurd but its actually a smart way to make aware of what's happening.

Here, the trailer of the film :

I, Daniel Blake

An other Time, a drama from Ken Loach receives the Palme d’Or .And it is not a surprise When you whatch the movie.

I Daniel Blake is a drama about what’s going on in dificulties at work for old workers. This film set in United kingdom.
There is also a women with two kids. This family makes Ken Loach’s film more dynamic since we can see mutual help beetween people.

I Daniel Blake is a very powerful film, I recomand it to people who like thriller movies

Film Review of Oliver Twist

This is a film review of the galvanazing movie/musical drama  “Oliver!” by Carole Reed which came out in 1968 from the book Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens  published in 1838.

This movie is a musical, and bring some joy in this really awful story. I chose this document because it denounce the wrenching living conditions and heartbreaking treatment in workhouses in the 19th century but in an light way. Thanks to this method, those who want just have a exellent time can enjoy the musical and those who paid attention can see the message of denunciation.                                      At first sight,  people can think that they are going just to see a musical, with great vibes and dances. In fact, this movie denounce the social injustice of the orphans through an appearance less shocking of the real situation.

Through this film, everyone can understand the conditions of living and how was it to live. But you can also enjoy the songs and dances. It’s a really marvellous film, because you learn about touching social injustices while enjoying the beauty of art.

The Hate U Give

This drama produced by George Tillman Jr. in 2018 is about social inequalities in the USA between black and white people.

George Tillman Jr. wanted to depict racial and social issues of black people through this movie. Starr Carter, a young black teenager, lost her friend who was shot by the police without any reasons. Here the director wanted to show the violence of racism in the USA. In fact this kind of drama often happens in this country. This movie is really touching and poignant because it’s a true story so thanks to it people can realize how far situations like this can go. Moreover, another issue depicted in this movie is the lack of money that many afro-Americans have to deal with because it is difficult for them to find a job.

Finally, this movie is so powerful and emotional that I think that everyone should watch this movie to be aware of  how hard it is for afro-Americans to live in the USA. It is such an important actual problem that George Tillman Jr wanted to raise attention of the viewers.
