Very controversial before people think it’s too simplistic to be art.
I have chosen Diptych Marilyn, is an acrylic screen print on canvas by the American artist Andy Warhol produced in 1962 and is exhibited at the Tate Modern an art gallery in London. This screen print contains 50 images of American actress and model Marilyn Monroe , all based on the same publicity photograph for the film Niagara (1953). It is enrolled in the movement of the Pop art. The 25 representations on the left of the diptych are very colorful, it represents her life while the 25 representations on the right are black and white, it represents the end of her life, her death. Andy Warhol decided to paint the Marilyn Diptych a few weeks after Monroe's death. He found in her a fusion of two constant themes: death and the cult of celebrity. By copying the same image several times, he evokes his presence in the media.
“Red Circle on Black”, Jiro Yoshihara, 1965
This amazing paint was created in 1965 by Jiro Yoshihara in Minimalism style. The artist is a pioneer of post-war Japanese art. He was inspired by Japanese calligraphy and Zen philosophy. He hand signed his artwork so it’s considered as extremely rare. Yoshihara used a technique for surface printing called Silkscreens. This artwork is the perfect representation of “less is more” a famous quote of minimalism art. In fact the colours used are monochromatic. The only motives are geometrical. I love this painting but I also really liked the mindset of the artist because while realising this artwork he said “Do what has never been done before”. “Red Circle on Black” definitely raised debates but I personally think that it deserves all of the fame it could possibly get.
Working in New York in the 1940s, Richard Pousette-Dart (1916–1992) created beautiful, colourful, layered paintings, characterised by his formal explorations of textural handling and built-up surfaces, as well as experimenting with drawing, photography and sculpture.
