Saint Patrick's day
St Patrick's day is The
National Day in Ireland. Irish people of all around the world
celebrate the day by wearing green, the colour of Ireland, and by
parading in the streets. They celebrate the patron saint of Ireland
but also the christianization of the country.
St Patrick was born in
Scotland. When he was 16, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold as a
slave to an Irish druid. He dicovered the christian religion.
After a dream in which he
saw God, he escaped from the druid to England where he became priest.
His goal was to come back to Ireland to convert the Irish people.
There, he built monastery, church ans schools to formed believer.
The legend says that he used
the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish. The three leaves
represented the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
The legend of St Patrick
also says that he chased all the snakes of Ireland by making them
fall of a cliff. But this is a metaphor for his victory of the
conversion of christianity in Ireland against the pagan faith.
